Health Care for Adolescents and Teens

When do you need a checkup?

All teens and adolescents should go to the doctor every year for a FREE checkup! See the experts' recommended schedule of checkups off-site link.

What happens at a checkup for a teen or adolescent?

  • A complete health and development history
  • A comprehensive physical exam
  • Needed immunizations (shots)
  • Needed lab tests
  • Health education
  • Vision and hearing testing
  • Dental screening

Of course, if you're having a problem, you can see your primary care provider (PCP) even if it is not time for checkup. You should never be ashamed to seek medical help.

Learn to talk to your doctor

Get used to asking your doctor questions. Some things you may want to discuss include:

  • Changes in your body
  • Healthy ways to keep your weight in line
  • If you're feeling very down and depressed and don't know why
  • Questions about birth control and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)

It's a good idea to talk to your parents about all of this, too.
