Preventive Services

Preventive care helps to keep you well and catches health problems early. Even if you have co-pays for your health care, you will not have co-pays for preventive care. You can do some things for yourself to stay healthy:

  • Stay active
  • Don't drink alcohol or take drugs
  • Eat right
  • Do self-examinations
  • Exercise
  • Take medicine just as your doctor says
  • Don't smoke
  • Get regular checkups

You can go to your PCP for a checkup to help you stay healthy. Your PCP may want to do tests to make sure you are OK. Some of these tests are for:

  • Cholesterol
  • Bone hardness (osteoporosis)
  • Blood sugar
  • Thyroid
  • Colon and rectal cancer
  • STDs (sexually transmitted diseases)
  • HIV and AIDS
  • Heart problems (EKG tests)
  • TB (tuberculosis)
  • Well-woman checkups (pap smears and mammogram)
  • Bone Density (age 60+)
  • Chlamydia (younger than 24)
