Healthy Kids & Teens

Helping your children stay healthy can start with one easy step – regular visits with their health care provider. CoverKids benefits provide free checkups through age 18 from your child’s personal doctor or primary care provider (PCP).

Your child or teen is also covered for medically necessary care and medicine to treat problems found at the checkup. This includes medical, dental, speech, hearing, vision and behavioral (mental health, alcohol or drug abuse problems).

When to Schedule a Checkup

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends 12 well-child screenings from birth through age 2½ and once a year from ages 3 through 20. Is it time for a checkup for your child or teen? We’ve put together a schedule for you below.

Healthy Minds for Kids

It can be easy for parents to spot a child’s physical needs, like when they’re hungry or need sleep. But it can be hard to understand mental health needs in children and teens. Is your child angry or sad, anxious or depressed? How do you know what’s normal or if you need to seek help?

Behavioral health includes mental and substance use disorders, and your health plan covers treatment for both. Can we help you with these benefits? Call us at 1-888-325-8386.

Need Help Now?

  • Call 911 if you’re worried your child may harm themselves or others.
  • Find help on the phone:
    • Tennessee Mental Health Crisis Hotline 1-855-274-7471
    • National Suicide Prevention Hotline 1-800-273-TALK (8255)
  • Go to a hospital emergency room or walk-in mental health crisis center.

No Referral Needed
Your child can see a behavioral health provider without a referral from their primary care provider. Check for network providers at Find A Doctor.

Primary Care Providers Can Help
Talk to your child’s primary care provider about emotional or behavioral problems. They can do screenings, recommend treatment or refer your child to a behavioral health specialist.
